Breast Cancer Screening

It is commonly agreed among most people that our health is one of the most important things we have. Often this is taken for granted until a serious health issue arises. When something does happen to us or someone we know, it makes us think for a minute and appreciate and value our own health more.

We all know of some of the basic things we should do to take care of our health. Getting regular exercise, eating a healthy diet and getting enough sleep are some of the most commonly known, but there are some other very important things to consider, such as having regular check-ups with your doctor.

One of the very important type of check-ups for women is breast cancer screening. Depending on age and risk of developing breast cancer, women should go in for breast cancer screening once every one to three years.

In the past, women were strongly encouraged to do breast self exams as a means of breast cancer screening. Because anything discovered by this method is likely to be at a rather advanced stage, this is no longer advised as necessary for all women. Instead, or at least additionally, a medical screening is advised.

The purpose of such a screening is to identify the existence of cancer in those who are otherwise healthy. Both the type of screening as well as their frequency depends on the person’s risk for developing the disease, with more rigorous and frequent test for those at higher risk.

A normal clinical breast cancer screening consists of a breast exam performed by a physician and an x-ray mammogram. For those at a higher risk of getting breast cancer, additional tools may be used such as genetic testing or breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

These tests are able to identify most cases of possible cancer, but of course cannot diagnose the cancer directly. If a lump is found, further diagnosis is necessary. Some tools used for diagnosis are mammogram and fine needle aspiration cytology. With these methods a closer look can be taken at anything discovered during the breast cancer screening.

It is extremely important for women to understand the value of regular breast cancer screenings. As with any other illness or disease, the sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the sooner and more effectively it can be treated. Cancer at a more advanced stage, that has gone undetected for too long, will require more drastic treatment measures, and is much more likely to carry other complications or to be terminal.

Most screenings and check-ups for women’s health issues are not looked forward to with anticipation by women. However, as we all value our health, it’s important for us to remember to do all we can to ensure that we are as healthy as possible and get the treatment necessary as soon as possible if we find that we aren’t.
